The Kilkennys have been going strong for almost two decades, ‘but don’t tell anyone’ says founding member Davey Cashin. Initially called Uisce Beatha before they decided to change their name in 2008 for something more recognisable and ‘pronounceable’. Drawing influence from The Dubliners, they named themselves for their home county and haven’t looked back since. Although Davey, Robbie and Tommy Mackey remain the founding members, new recruit Mick Martin has been brought in to bring the uileann pipes to the band’s sound. That sound has evolved over the years into a unique high-energy hybrid of folk and trad that always generates a huge amount of audience participation. Their Smithwick’s Session will be sure to generate a lot of interest.
